Biography
Bill Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 28 1955. His father is William H. Gates Sr (Born 1925, currently 93 years old) is a retired lawyer. His Mother was Mary Maxwell Gates (1929-1994). He had 2 siblings, one older sister Kristianne and another younger sister Libby. He grew up in a middle-upper class family. The Gates family was tightly knit and the children were always encouraged to be competitive and strive for excellence. Young Bill was always competitive as he would organize family games at there summer home in Puget Sound. He excelled at board games such as Risk and Monopoly. Around age 10 and 11 he became an outstanding reader often times reading reference books such as the encyclopedia. He was so focused in his studies that his parents became concerned with his behavior and although he was doing well in school, they were worried about him becoming a loner. At age 13 his parents enrolled him in Seattle exclusive Preparatory Lakeside school. He blossomed in nearly all subjects, especially Math, Science and English. While at Lakeside, the school adopted a system of letting there student work with a teletype terminal (computer). Bill became very intrigued by the capacities this terminal and would spend much of his free time with it. He created a Tic-Tac-Toe game written in BASIC computer language, enabling users to play versus the computer. He later graduated from Lakeside in 1973 and scoring 1590/1600 on the college SAT test which was a very impressive feat.
Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard University in the fall of 1973, to follow the steps of his father of a career in law. Although during his first year he spent more of his time in the computer lab rather than in class. He never really studied and would just pass by with a few hours of sleep by cramming his studying and homework late, after his time in the lab. Most of the time passing tests with a decent grade. Within 2 year he dropped out of Harvard (as he says it was only a leave of absence) to pursue his career in business and the start of Microsoft with his friend Paul Allen. In 1975 Gates and Allen formed Micro-Soft, a combination of micro-computer and software. The company had a tough start but already by 1979 the company was worth 2.5 million dollars. At the age of 23 he named himself head of Microsoft. With his ability as a software developer and a keen business sense he led the company as its spokesperson. He would personally review every product that was shipped to ensure top quality and often times rewrite some of the coding when he felt necessary. Once the development of IBM was completed the value of Microsoft between 1979 and 1981 spiked. An additional 83 workers were employed making a tally of 108 and revenue shot up to 16 million dollars. In mid 1981 Gates and Allen Incorporated Microsoft, Gates named Chairman and President and Allen named executive Vice President.
Since Bill Gates has left the day to day operations in 2014 Microsoft he has became a Philanthropist and had several other projects. In 2013 he was named the wealthiest person in the world with a net worth of $78.5 billion. Most of Gates money is in a Cascade Investment LLC, through this investment he owns lots of stakes in different businesses including Four Seasons Hotels. In 2014 he stepped down as chairman of Microsoft to become Technology Adviser alongside the new CEO Satya Nadella. Bill Gates married Melinda Gates who was a former Microsoft employee. Together they had 3 kids, Phoebe Gates, Jennifer Gates, and Rory Gates.
